Educational Benchmarks
High quality educational apps should meet five educational benchmarks:
- They follow a particular curriculum
- Their teaching approach is informed by a particular learning theory
- They provide scaffolding (i.e., educational supports)
- They provide informative feedback
- Their development team includes experts in education (e.g., teachers or researchers)
To choose good apps, educators and parents should look for educational apps that describe how they meet these benchmarks in their app store descriptions. However, many apps fill their descriptions with buzzwords, which do not provide evidence of educational quality.
Our research investigates whether parents and educators prefer apps whose descriptions mention educational benchmarks over apps whose descriptions only mention buzzwords.
