New Article Alert! Pearson and Dubé Examine How Maker Activities Foster Self-Directed Learning

May 29, 2025

We are thrilled to announce the publication of a new peer-reviewed article by TLC Lab members Heather Ann Pearson and Dr. Adam Dubé in the International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction. The article, titled “Developing Maker Activities to Enhance Adolescents’ Self-Directed Learning: A Systematic Review,” synthesizes research on how maker-centric educational technologies—like 3D printing—can be used to cultivate essential self-directed learning (SDL) skills in high school students.
The review identifies key instructional models and six critical characteristics of SDL-enabling environments, including guiding supports, collaboration, inquiry, and differentiation.

Based on their findings, Pearson and Dubé propose a practical framework for educators seeking to integrate making activities into their classrooms in a way that truly empowers adolescent learners.
